Old Woman

“Old Woman”, linoleum stencil, each 30x40cm, 2006

The series of prints shows portraits of old or elderly women. Old or elderly women are under-represented in the world of art and in the media. Rarely can one find a portrait of an older woman in an art gallery. Elderly women seem to belong to an invisible generation.

The portraits are designed to highlight the archetypal image of the old woman as a source of wisdom. Towards the end of the series, the colours are replaced by black and white and different sections of the print are gradually cut away, reflecting the loss of physical substance which comes with aging.

The portraits slowly disappear, just as a physical presence fades away.
